Tookie

Stanley "Tookie" Williams is the co-founder of the CRIPS.
He is on death row and scheduled to be executed tonight.
At 12 midnight.

That's in about 30 minutes.

Many people think that Governor Schwarzenegger should grant him clemency, but "The governor rejected pleas from Hollywood stars and petitions from more than 50,000 people. Supporters say Williams redeemed himself during more than 20 years in prison by writing a memoir and a series of children's books about the dangers of gangs. "

I don't know what to say about the death penalty. Obviously it doesn't stop people from doing stuff. I don't know what's up with letting this guy sit in prison for 20 years and THEN killing him. I don't know what kind of message it will send people when you kill a guy who "tried" to make amends. Maybe he is just trying to fool everyone. He can't be that dumb if he started a nationwide craze along the lines of a religion in and of itself. I think I'm glad that this isn't my responsibility. I think I would vote against the death penalty if came up. I think my opinion only matters to me and isn't going to change anything in my lifetime.

Thus the ranting ends.

I was about to rant on this but had no time to get into details... maybe tomorrow...

Death penalty is dumb. Like you said, it obviously isn't stopping those who really want to do what they want to do... even if it meant facing the possibility of the death penalty. George W. Bush, as a governor, has indirectly executed more people during his term in TX than all other governors of all times combined. And he fooled over 1/2 of the Americans as a born-again Christian... What a joke.

Criminals are the responsibilities of the society. It is within the confines of a society that criminals are born and manifested; thus they should be the responsibility of the society to re-educate, reform and do something about those criminals. For a country that champions human rights to have legalized death penalty is somewhat disappointing to see (and Americans complain how "cruel" it is to cane criminals who committed vandalism in Singapore while the American government kills people in the name of justice?)....

Anyway, death penalty is wrong. While America puts "GOD" in almost everything it does (on money, in swearing into court, in the Pledge of Allegiance and other things), maybe it should look harder on what Jesus says about killing people in the Bible? "What would Jesus do if.... ?"
